Back when having an online presence started to seem important, I was supposed to start writing a blog for Bicycling.com. But I sucked. I’m not the kind of journalist who can break big news or report quickly enough to get on top of the day’s issues, or figure out exciting ways to recap gossip. But I like to write stories, and I like to ride my bike, so I started seeing if I could make each post a little narrative about riding, and I tried to do one a week. I failed a lot, but traffic — that’s readers — picked up almost right away, and sometimes Sitting In, which I came to think of as more of a column than a blog, ended up being one of the most popular parts of the site. For a little more than four years I posted just about weekly. I stopped in October, 2010, with one called “How to Ride Alone.” Here’s that one, plus some others I think of as successes for one reason or another.
